Understanding the Oncology Challenge

Pediatric cancer spans over 100 known types — from leukemia and brain tumors to dozens of rarer conditions, each requiring specialized care. Only 2,270 pediatric oncologists practice in the US today, concentrated in cities and children's hospitals.

A child in a small town is diagnosed with a rare sarcoma, one only a handful of hospitals nationwide routinely treat. A clinical trial testing a treatment for exactly her diagnosis is enrolling patients two hours away. Her oncologist has never heard of it; most community doctors never do. By the time her family finds out, it may already be full.
