Nephrology

For some families, reaching a pediatric nephrologist means driving over 100 miles, if there's an opening at all. We're building the tools to break down that barrier.

Understanding the Nephrology Challenge

Pediatric nephrology spans over 170 known conditions, from congenital anomalies at birth to genetic and immune diseases that emerge later. For a child with kidney failure, even getting on the transplant waitlist can depend on where they live.

"We used an AI algorithm to find a mutation a standard genetic test had missed. That family went on to have a healthy baby."

What is changing in this field

A failing kidney often shows up first in routine bloodwork, small changes in labs a child may have had drawn for another reason entirely. AI trained to catch these patterns over time can flag a problem before it becomes an emergency.

Most AI reads one kind of data at a time, usually text-based. Ours reads imaging, genomics, and the clinical knowledge underneath. Trained together, not separately, to catch what a single-lens model would miss.

The Atlas

A disease-precise map of pediatric kidney conditions: how each one presents, progresses, and differs from the rest. The foundation every tool we build starts from.

What's Ahead

Agents and apps for conditions from birth defects to diseases that emerge later, for clinics without this specialty on staff.

Patient Story

A child is born with kidney disease and will often need dialysis three times a week for years. The nearest pediatric nephrologist is two hours away, even though an adult dialysis center is five minutes from home. Nationwide, there's roughly one pediatric nephrologist for every 100,000 children. A few states have none at all.

"It takes a lot of expertise and high-level knowledge to find these conditions, and that expertise is only going to become more rare."

Dr. Alejandro Quiroga

CEO, Children's Mercy Kansas City / former pediatric nephrologist
